Abstract
Cognitive behavior therapy is one of the most effective empirically-based psychological interventions for depression. However there are many Korean depressive adolescents untreated due to time or geographical constraints. The purpose of present study was to develop a 3D game-based cognitive behavior therapy program for depressed adolescents and examine its efficacy. A total of 57 depressive adolescents aged 13-17 years were assigned into either a 3D-game based CBT group (n=28) or a wait-list group (n=29). The 3D-game based CBT consists of 10 sessions having 3 stages: 1) psycho-education and CBT for adolescent depression, 2) social skill training and anger control program, 3) learning abilities (planning, attention and memory functions) enhancement program. The 3D-game based CBT group underwent 30 minutes of intervention per day, two days per week. We used objective cognitive measures to evaluate changes with respect to three stages: attention, memory, working memory, and self-report questionnaires to assess depression, self-esteem, social competence, and quality of life (QOL). Both groups showed slight improvements in scores of depression, QOL, attention and memory functions after the treatment. Especially, the treatment group showed significant changes in attention and working memory, but the control group did not show those changes. This study suggested that the 3D-game based CBT we developed might be effective for helping adolescents with mild depressive symptoms at home and school.
